Welcome back, students! Today, we’ll learn, HOW TO SAY “I’M FINE” in Amharic. In our last lesson, we learned how to say “How are you?” for different people. Today, we will learn how to answer that question and keep the conversation going!
Alright, so the first question is:
1. HOW TO SAY “I’M FINE”
The most common way to say “I’m fine” is:
- ደህና ነኝ። (Dehna negn.)
It stays the same whether you are a man or a woman, because ነኝ (negn) means “I am.” So, we say:
- ደህና ነኝ። (Dehna negn.)
2. ARE THERE OTHER WAYS TO SAY “I’M FINE”?
Yes, you can also use these common expressions:
- ሰላም ነኝ። (Selam negn.) — I’m fine / I’m good.
- በጣም ደህና ነኝ። (Betam dehna negn.) — I’m very well.
- አለሁ። (Alehu.) — I am still alive, or I’m doing okay.
3. HOW TO ASK “HOW ABOUT YOU?”
To keep the conversation going, we put a pronoun right after “Dehna negn” depending on the gender or respect level of the person we are talking to, and we attach the suffix –ስ (-s) to that pronoun. For example:
- ደህና ነኝ። አንተስ? (Dehna negn. Antes?) — I’m fine. How about you? (to a man)
- ደህና ነኝ። አንቺስ? (Dehna negn. Anchis?) — I’m fine. How about you? (to a woman)
- ደህና ነኝ። እርስዎስ? (Dehna negn. Erswos?) — I’m fine. How about you? (respectful)
- ደህና ነኝ። እናንተስ? (Dehna negn. Enantes?) — I’m fine. How about you all? (plural)
Or we can ask the full question:
- ደህና ነኝ። አንተስ እንዴት ነህ? (Dehna negn. Antes endet neh?) — I’m fine. How about you? (to a man)
- ደህና ነኝ። አንቺስ እንዴት ነሽ? (Dehna negn. Anchis endet nesh?) — I’m fine. How about you? (to a woman)
- ደህና ነኝ። እርስዎስ እንዴት ነዎት? (Dehna negn. Erswos endet newot?) — I’m fine. How about you? (respectful)
- ደህና ነኝ። እናንተስ እንዴት ናችሁ? (Dehna negn. Enantes endet nachihu?) — I’m fine. How about you all? (plural)
4. HOW TO SAY “I’M FINE TOO”
To say “I’m fine too,” we add እኔም (enem) before “Dehna negn.” እኔም means “me too” or “I also.” Example:
- እኔም ደህና ነኝ። (Enem dehna negn.) — I’m fine too.
5. HOW TO SAY “WE ARE FINE”
If you are responding as a group, change ነኝ (negn – I am) to ነን (nen – we are):
- ደህና ነን። (Dehna nen.) — We are fine.
- ሰላም ነን። (Selam nen.) — We are good.
6. QUICK PRACTICE
Let’s practice together! I will ask, and you answer out loud:
If I ask you: እንዴት ነህ? (Endet neh?)
You say: ደህና ነኝ። አንተስ? (Dehna negn. Antes?)
Or: ደህና ነኝ። አንተስ እንዴት ነህ? (Dehna negn. Antes endet neh?)
Then I respond: እኔም ደህና ነኝ! (Enem dehna negn!)
