Step-by-Step Guide to Installing and Using the Agerigna Amharic Keyboard
In this lesson, I will show you step-by-step how to install, configure, and use the best Amharic keyboard mobile app—one that I have personally used for more than 6 years.
Typing on your phone is actually very easy, and I highly recommend installing the Agerigna Amharic Keyboard on your smartphone (iPhone or Android). It is the most intuitive app for typing Amharic quickly; it is completely ad-free, and it remains clean and fast.
Step 1: Installation
| Platform | Where to Find It |
|---|---|
| Android | Google Play Store |
| iPhone | Apple App Store |
Search for “Agerigna Amharic Keyboard” and install it.
Step 2: Initial Configuration
Once installed, open the Agerigna app to begin the setup:
Enable the Keyboard:
Tap on the “Finished” button to enable it in the app settings. A system popup will appear; select the Agerigna አገርኛ keyboard from the list and tap “OK” twice to confirm.
Switch Input Method:
Now click on the “Switch Input Method” button to toggle on the Agerigna አገርኛ keyboard.
Test It Out:
Now just click on the “Try Keyboard” button to test it. A text field or box will pop up. Click on the globe icon to change the language if it hasn’t already, then start typing.
💡 You do NOT need to navigate your phone’s settings manually — the app does this for you. That’s it! You have finished the configuration process.
Step 3: Optimizing Language Settings
For the best typing experience, go to the “Language & Layouts” section:
- Select “አማርኛ – Compact” — This mode is highly recommended. It makes typing much faster because it uses a smart popup system for Geez characters. When you tap one consonant letter, its families appear in the top right corner, so you can select any letter easily.
- You can also enable other languages like Afaan Oromoo, Tigrinya, or Arabic under this same section.
Step 4: How to Type in Amharic
Typing with this keyboard is intuitive once you understand the “Base Letter” system:
- Use the globe icon on the keyboard to switch between English and Amharic.
- When you tap a base consonant (e.g., ሀ), the entire family of that letter (ሁ, ሂ, ሃ, ሄ, ህ, ሆ, ኋ) will pop up in the top right corner. Simply tap the specific variation you need.
The Double-Tap Rule
If you only want to type the base consonant itself, tap that same key a second time.
Example: To type the word “ይህንን”, tap the ን key twice to get the ንን ending.
Pro Tips for Faster Learning
- Visual Recognition: As the family of letters expands on your screen, use the “8 Secrets” or patterns mentioned in this workbook (like loops, legs, or crowns) to recognize which vowel sound you are choosing.
- Special Characters: Some Amharic letters like ጥ, ጭ, ኝ, ጅ, ጽ, or less frequent characters like ኅ, ኽ, ዕ, ሥ, ቭ, ጵ, etc., require a Shift toggle to keep the main interface clean and easy to use.
- Practice Through Typing: Typing on your phone is one of the fastest ways to build muscle memory for the Amharic alphabet. It forces you to physically see and act on the connection between a base consonant and its vowel variations.
Key Features & Customization
- Ad-Free Experience: One of the best parts of this app is that it is completely free and has no annoying popup ads.
- Themes: You can customize the look of your keyboard by choosing from various themes in the settings.
Auto-Correction (Important Tip!)
Under “Keyboard Behavior,” you might want to turn off auto-correction. While personalized suggestions are helpful, auto-correction can sometimes change Amharic words unexpectedly when you hit the spacebar. Disabling it gives you full control over your messages.
