Why I Don’t Use Transliteration in My Lessons
Many Amharic learners ask why I don’t include Latin transliteration (writing Amharic sounds using English letters) in my lessons. Some even skip my content because of this. I understand that transliteration feels “easier” at first, but I avoid it for very specific reasons:
-
It Hinders Your Progress: Transliteration acts as a “crutch.” It makes learners lazy because your eyes naturally skip the Amharic characters and jump to the English letters you already know. This stops you from truly mastering the Amharic letters.
-
It Destroys Accuracy: While transliteration makes words seem predictable, it is impossible to capture true Amharic sounds with Latin letters. This leads to poor pronunciation and stops you from reading naturally.
-
Visual Clutter: Adding transliteration doubles the length of the text and makes it look messy. It takes away from the natural beauty and flow of the Amharic script.
-
Time-Consuming: Preparing transliteration for every lesson takes significant time—time I would rather spend creating high-quality educational content for you.
My question to you is: Why depend on a crutch when you can be an independent Amharic reader in less than a week?
The Amharic alphabet (Fidel) is logical and beautiful. It doesn’t take a week to master. So why stay dependent on the Latin script?
I have created a comprehensive 5-day Amharic Alphabet Course, available for free in both video and written formats. In just five days of practice, you can learn to read and write Amharic on your own.
Stop relying on translations and start reading the language as it was meant to be read!
