- 🗣 What language do you speak?

📚 Grammar Explanation (10 Minutes)
Common Nouns:
A common noun is a general name for a person, place, animal, or thing. It does not refer to one specific person or place.
Examples:
- 👤 ሰው (sew) person
- 🏫 ቤት (bet) house
- 🌊 ወንዝ (wenz) river
- 📖 መጽሀፍ (metshaf) book
- 🌍 አገር (ager) country
💡 Memory Trick:
Think of Common Nouns as “Everyday Sharing Words.” Millions of things share the same name (every town is a ‘ከተማ’). Think of Proper Nouns as a “Special ID Tag.” Only specific things get this special name (only one specific city is ‘አዲስ አበባ’).
Proper Nouns:
A proper noun is the specific name of a person, place, river, city, country, or other unique thing.
Examples:
- 👤 አበበ (Abebe)
- 🏙 አዲስ አበባ (Addis Ababa)
- 🌊 አባይ (Nile)
- 🌍 ኢትዮጵያ (Ethiopia)
✅ Simple Rule:
- Common noun = general name
- Proper noun = specific name
Example:
- ከተማ → Common noun
- አዲስ አበባ → Proper noun
| Common Nouns | Proper Noun |
| ተማሪ (Student) |
|
| አገር (Country) |
|
| ቋንቋ (Language) |
|
| መፅሀፍ (Book) |
|
The nouns on the left are common nouns that everyone or everything is called by. On the right, however, are specific nouns. For instance, ተማሪ (student) is a common noun for all students, whereas ‘ሙሐመድ (Muhammad)’ is a specifically known personal name.
