From my experience, what has been the most comfortable way for learning a language is learning it naturally. Now, what does it mean to learn a language naturally?
Learning a language naturally means learning without scrutinizing grammar too much or worrying about excessive details; it’s about letting go, having fun with the language. You can achieve this by using a phrasebook. The more phrases you learn, the more you’ll build your language skills. For example, in a week, you could take a day to learn around five phrases and continue practicing them. Try using these phrases with native speakers. If you can maintain this practice for several months—let’s, say three months—you’ll definitely notice a difference in your proficiency.
You don’t need to touch the grammar rules. Just:
- Learn phrases
- Practice them
- Use them!

In this article I have listed 80 most common Amharic phrases that we use in many situations. I have organized them into categories like greetings, everyday expressions, food, shopping, etc. Notice: If you find it hard to pronounce them, contact me here. | The greatest greeting is “አሰላሙ ዓለይኩም።” Which means “Peace be upon you.” “As-salamu alaykum” (السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ) is an Arabic greeting used by all Muslims around the world. The typical response to “As-salamu alaykum” is “ወዓለይኩም አሰላም / Wa alaykum as-salam” (وَعَلَيْكُمُ السَّلَامُ), which means “And peace be upon you too.” This greeting reflects the desire for peace and well-being for the person being greeted. |

| አላውቅም ለማለት የምንጠቀማቸው አባባሎች።Common phrases to say I don’t know: |
| እኔ ስለዛ ጉዳይ ምንም አላውቅም። I have no idea/clue. |
| እኔ ስለዚህ ነገር ምንም እውቀቱ የለኝም። I can’t help you there. |

| አይ፣ እርግጠኛ አይደለሁም። I’m not really sure. |

| Common phrases for not having an opinion: |
| ብዙም አስቤበት አላውቅም። I’ve never given it much thought. |
| ለእኔ ምንም ለውጥ የለውም፤ ያው ነው። It doesn’t make any difference to me. |
| እኔ በዚህ ጉዳይ ላይ ምንም ዓይነት አስተያየት የለኝም። I have no opinion on the matter. |
