Ethiopian months & Calendars Explained: Learn Amharic

  1. Ask a simple question: “Do you know how many months we have in Ethiopia?”
  2. Compare Ethiopian calendar vs. Gregorian briefly (13 months, 30 days each, plus Pagume).
  3. It’s currently 7 or 8 years behind the Gregorian calendar because of different calculations for the birth of Jesus.
  4. ጳጉሜ is the final month in Ethiopian and it’s very short. It has only five days, or six days in a leap year.
  5. In the Ethiopian calendar, the first 12 months have 30 days each, and the 13th month, Pagume, has 5 or 6 days depending on the year.
  6. መስከረም (Meskerem) / September is the Ethiopian new year.
  7. The main rainy season called ክረምት (Kremt).

  8. The dry season is called በጋ (Bega).
