🌅 Let’s learn some beautiful Amharic words about time of the day.

Learning Amharic time words makes it easier to understand the different parts of the day and use the right greetings. With these words, you’ll not only know how to say morning, afternoon, evening, and night in Amharic, but also greet and respond naturally with expressions like እንደት ዋልክ? ደህና ውያለሁ። and እንደት አደርሽ? ደህና አድሪያለሁ።


🌇 Evening Words

ምሽት (mishit) Noun = early evening, sunset time 🌇

  • ማምሸት (Mamshet) Verb = to stay late at night 🔥🔥🔥
  • እየመሸ ነው። (It’s getting late.)
  • ውጭ አታምሽ። (Don’t stay out.)
  • ምሽት ዜና እንሰማለን። (We will listen the evening news.)

🌙 ማታ (mata) = later evening, general night 🌙

  • አዳር (adar) Noun = the night
  • ማደር (Mader) Verb = spending the night (like sleeping over) 🛏️
  • ለሊት (Lelit) = the deep night, midnight hours 🌌

☀️ Morning Words

  • ንጋት (nigat) Noun = dawn, first light 🌄
  • ጧት (twat) Noun = morning ☀️
  • ረፋድ (refad) Noun = the late morning, before lunch 🍽️
  • ማርፈድ (Marfed) Verb = ስራ በጧት ጀምር፣ ማርፈድ የለብህም። Start work early, you shouldn’t be late.
  • ስላረፈድኩ ይቅርታ። Sorry I’m late.
  • እንዴት አረፈድሽ? = How was your late morning?
    እንዴት አረፈድክ? = How was your late morning?

Daytime

  • ቀን (qen) = day, sunlight hours 🌞
  • ከሰአት (ke-se’at) = afternoon, after midday 🕒
  • ቀን ቀን እንቅልፌ ይመጣል። I get sleepy every day.

🏃‍♀️ ውሎ (wulo) The day

  • ውሎ እንዴት ነበር? = How was your day?
  • መልካም ውሎ። Have a nice day.
  • If I ask you, Endemin walek? → I mean, how was your wulo (day)?
  • እንደት ዋልክ? = Good afternoon. / How was your day?
