What Is the Amharic Alphabet?

The Amharic alphabet, known as Fidel (ፊደል), is a unique and beautiful script used in Ethiopia. Each character typically represents a consonant-vowel pair (like ‘Be’, ‘Bu’, or ‘Bi’), making it a syllabary.

However, the letters in the 6th row like ህ, ል, ም, etc., represent the base consonant sound without a vowel attached to them. We produce the other letters by adding vowel sounds to these base forms.

How many letters are in the Amharic Language?

The Amharic alphabet has 259 letters including Dqala Hohieyat (the hybrid letters). The entire Alphabet or Fidel Gebeta is built upon just 34 consonant letters, each of which forms a family of seven or eight related letters.
While this number may seem large, many of these letters are not used in everyday writing, so the task of learning them is more manageable than it seems.
