Amharic Numeric adjectives

Numerical adjectives are called አኃዛዊ ቅጽል in Amharic. They express quantity by using numbers and describe the number or order of people or things. Here are some examples of numerical adjectives:

Numeric Adjectives (አኃዛዊ ቅጽላት)

1. Cardinal Numbers (የቁጥር ቅጽላት) – Show quantity

• አንድ (one)፣ ሁለት (two)፣ ሦሥት (three)፣ አራት (four)፣ አምስት (five) ወዘተ
• ምሳሌ (Example):
  • እኔ ሦሥት ሙዞችን በላሁ። (I ate three bananas.)
  • እኔ አንዲት ሴት ልጅ አለችኝ። (I have one daughter.)

2. Ordinal Numbers (የቅደም ተከተል ቅጽላት) – Show position or order

• አንደኛ (first)፣ ሁለተኛ (second)፣ ሦሥተኛ (third)፣ አራተኛ (fourth)፣ አምስተኛ (fifth) ወዘተ
• ምሳሌ (Example):
  • አንተ አንደኛ ነህ! You’re number one!
  • ከክፍሉ ተማሪ እሷ አንደኛ ወጣች። She came first in the class.
  • እሱ የመጀመሪያ ልጄ ነው። (He is my first child.)
  • እሱ ገና የሁለተኛ ክፍል ተማሪ ነው። He is a second-grade student, after all.

3. Multiplicative Adjectives (የብዛት ቅጽላት) Show how many times something is multiplied

• እጥፍ (double)፣ ሁለት እጥፍ (twofold)፣ ሦሥት እጥፍ (threefold)፣ አምስት እጥፍ (fivefold)፣ ሦሥት እጥፍ (triple)፣ አራት እጥፍ (quadruple) ወዘተ
• ምሳሌ (Example):
  • ዋጋው ሁለት እጥፍ ጨምሯል። The price increased twofold.
  • ዱቄቱ ላይ ሦሥት እጥፍ መጠን ያለው ውሃ ጨምሪበት። (Add triple the amount of water to the flour.)

መልመጃ፦ ቀጥለው በቀረቡት ዓረፍተ ነገሮች ውስጥ ያሉትን አኃዛዊ ቅጽሎች በመለየት ግንዛቤዎን ይፈትሹ።

1. እሱ በንግዱ ሁለት እጥፍ አተረፈ። He got a twofold return on his investment.
2. እሱ አንድም ስህተት አልሰራም። He did not make a single mistake.
3. ይህ ሆቴል ሁለተኛ ደረጃ ሆቴል ነው። This hotel is second rate.
4. እሱ ዳግማዊ ሸክስፒር ነኝ ባይ ነው። He thinks he is a second Shakspeare.
5. እኔ ሶስት መቶ ሀምሳ መጽሐፍቶች አሉኝ። I have three hundred fifty books.
6. አንድ ቀን ይጸጸታል። He will regret one day.
7. ከመታጠፊያው ላይ ያለው የመጀመሪያው ቤት ነው። It is the first house around the corner.
8. ማንኛውም ቋንቋ ሁለት ፍች ያላቸው ቃላት አሉት። Every language has words that have double meanings.
9. ይሄ ሶፋ ሁለት ጥቅም አለው። This sofa serves double purpose.
