Amharic Parts of Speech
Object Pronouns in Amharic
In this lesson, you will learn about Amharic object pronouns. Object pronouns are the parts of the pronoun that the action happens on. And they are known as ተሳቢ ተውላጠ ስሞች in Amharic. They are listed below:
ተሳቢ ተውላጠ ስሞች (Object pronouns) | ||
እኔን /ለኔ | Me | |
አንተን /ላንተ | You | |
አንችን /ላንች | You | |
እናንተን /ለናንተ | You | |
እሱን /ለሱ | Him | |
እሷን /ለሷ | Her | |
እሱን /ለሱ /እሷን /ለሷ | It | |
እኛን /ለኛ | Us | |
እነሱን /ለነሱ | Them |
ምሣሌ፦
- ፋጢማ ድመቶችን ትወዳለች። እሷ እነሱን ማሻሸት ያስደስታታል። (Fatima likes cats. She likes to stroke them.)
Here the objective noun is “ድመቶችን (Cats)” and the verb is “ትወዳለች (likes)”.
In the second sentence, the word “እነሱን (them)” is an object pronoun, and “ማሻሸት (stroke)” is the action verb. So the action receiver is here “እነሱን (them). እነሱ is a subject pronoun; when we add ን to it, it will become an object pronoun.
The action applies to the object nouns too.
An other example:
In a sentence that is the same with like this: “ፋጢማ ድመቶቹን ትመታቸዋለች።” (Fatima beats the cats.) Fatima is the doer of the action and the cats are the victims of the action. Here it is the letter “ን” that shows us that the word ድመቶቹን is the victim of the action. If it were just “ድመቶቹ” it would be just a noun. When we add the letter “ን” at the end of any noun, the word becomes an object noun.
Example:

ድሃ = Poor | ድሃን አብላ። Feed the poor. |
ለማኝ = Beggar | ለማኝንም አትገላምጥ፡፡ Nor repulse the beggar; |
