In this lesson, you will learn various ways to express gratitude in Amharic, like “አመሰግናለሁ / thank you.” Whether you’re thanking a friend, a colleague, or someone who has gone out of their way to help you, these phrases will help you show your appreciation in Amharic.
① አመሰግናለሁ። → Thank you.
② በጣም አመሰግናለሁ። → Thank you very much. Thanks a lot.
③ ከልብ አመሰግናለሁ። → Sincerely, thanks.
④ አስደስተኸኛል። → You’ve made my day.
⑤ ስላደረክልኝ ነገር ሁሉ ከልቤ አመሰግናለሁ። → Thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything!
⑥ ትልቅ ነገር ነው ያደረክልኝ። → What you’ve done means a lot to me.
⑦ እንዴት ላመሰግንህ እንደምችል አላውቅም። → I don’t know how to express my thanks.
⑧ ምስጋናየን ለመግለፅ ቃላት ያጥረኛል። → There are no words to show my appreciation.
⑨ በጣም ጥሩ ሰው ነህ፤ አመሰግናለሁ። → You are so kind.
Responding (ምላሽ መስጠት)
- ምንም ችግር የለም። No problem.
- ኧረ ችግር የለውም። Don’t mention it.
- አታስብ። Forget it.
- ደስታው የኔው ነው። My pleasure.
- ችግር የለም። Don’t mention it.
- ምንም ማለት አይደለም። It was nothing, no big deal
- ምንም አትጨነቅ። Think nothing of it.
- ልረዳህ በመቻሌ ደስ ብሎኛል። I’m glad I could help you.
- ስለረዳሁህ ደስ ብሎኛል። I’m glad I helped you.
- ምስጋናህን ተቀብያለሁ። You’re welcome.
Some of these phrases are all for males. Let’s conjugate them for females now.
- አታስቢ። Forget it.
- ምንም አትጨነቂ። Think nothing of it.
- ልረዳሽ በመቻሌ ደስ ብሎኛል። I’m glad I could help you.

① አመሰግናለሁ (Ameseginalehu) is the most common way to say “thank you” in Amharic and can be used in almost any situation.
②Adding በጣም (Betam) before አመሰግናለሁ (Ameseginalehu) makes it more emphatic, meaning “thank you very much.“
③ When responding to thanks, ምንም ችግር የለም (no problem) is the most formal and polite response.
