Key Notes:
Gender-specific greetings:- አለን means ደህና ነኝ or ደህና ነን. We are fine. / I’m fine.)
- Use አለህ? (Aleh?) for males and
- አለሽ? (Alesh?) for females. Both mean “Are you fine?”
- Use አላችሁ? (Alachihu?) to ask a group, “Are you all alive?”
- Respond with አለን (Alen), which means “We are alive” or “We’re good.”
In Amharic, it’s common for a single person to refer to themselves as እኛ (We) and say አለን (Alen) to mean “I’m good.” Don’t be confused if you hear this—it’s a cultural nuance!
