Words with ሎ (Lo)

The letter ሎ (lo) might not start many Amharic words, but it certainly plays a significant role in the middle or at the end of many everyday terms. Let’s explore some of these words and how they’re used.

1. ሎሌ (Lolie) Servant, lackey

• እስራኤል ናት የአሜሪካ ሎሌ ወይስ አሜሪካ ናት የእስራኤል ሎሌ? (israel nat yeAmerica lolie, weys America nat yeIsrael lolie?) Is Israel America’s lackey? Or is America Israel’s lackey?

2. ሎሚ (Lomi) Lemon

• ሎሚ ለጤንነት ጥሩ ነው። (Lomi letiennet tru new.) English Translation: Lemon is good for health.

We’ve seen that the Amharic letter ሎ (lo) rarely starts a word, but that doesn’t mean it’s uncommon! In fact, ‘ሎ’ plays a significant role in the middle or at the end of many everyday words.

3. ክልሎች (Klloch) Regions, zones (plural of ክልል)

• ኢትዮጵያ በብዙ ክልሎች የተከፋፈለች ሀገር ናት። (Ethiopia bebzu klloch yetekefafelech hager nat.) Ethiopia is a country divided into many regions.

4. ወሎ (Wollo) (region in Ethiopia)

• ወሎ በታሪኩ የታወቀ ክልል ነው። (Wollo betariku yetaweqe kll new.)
  Wollo is a region known for its history.

5. ኪሎ (Kilo)

• አንድ ኪሎ ሽንኩርት ስንት ብር ነው? (And killo shinkurt snt br new?) How much is one kilo of onions?

6. ሌሎች (Leloch) Others

• ሌሎች ሀገሮች እንደሰሩት እኛም መስራት እንችላለን። (Lieloch hageroch endeserut egnam mesrat enchilalen.) We can also do as other countries have done.

7. አገልግሎት (Agelglot) Service

• ድርጅቶቹ ቅዳሜና እሁድ አገልግሎት አይሰጡም። (Drjitochu qdamiena ehud agelglot aysetum.) The organizations don’t provide service on Saturdays and Sundays.

8. መሰናክሎች (Mesenakiloch) Obstacles, hurdles

• ከፈለከው ቦታ ለመድረስ ብዙ መሰናክሎችን ማለፍ አለብህ። (Kefelekew bota lemedres bzu mesenaklochin malef alebh.) You have to overcome many obstacles to reach your desired place.

9. ኃይሎች (Hayiloch) Forces, powers (plural of ኃይል)

• በህገወጥ መልኩ የተደራጁ ኃይሎች ህዝብ እያስቸገሩ ነው። (Behgewet melku yetederaju hayloch hzb eyaschegeru new.) Illegally organized forces are bothering people.

10. ተብሎ (Teblo) It is said

• በእነዚህ የተደራጁ ኃይሎች ላይ መንግስት እርምጃ ይወስዳል ተብሎ ይታሰባል። (beenezih yetederaju hayloch lay mengst ermja ywesdal teblo ytasebal.) It is thought that the government will take action against these organized forces.

11. ብሎ (Blo) he said

• እሱ እንዲህ ብሎ ነው የነገረኝ። (Esu endih blo new yenegeregn.) He told me like this.
• ጽሁፉ እንዲህ ብሎ ይጀምራል። (Tshufu endih blo yjemral.) The writing begins by saying this.

12. ጎደሎ (Godelo) Incomplete, lacking,

• ጀሪካኑ ጎደሎ ነው። (Jerikanu godelo new.) The jerrycan is not full/half empty.

And there you have it—a deep dive into words featuring ሎ (lo) in Amharic! It’s clear that understanding where ‘ሎ’ fits in words truly enriches your vocabulary.

After this, we’ll shift gears and explore words starting with መ (me). You might wonder why we’re skipping ሐ (ha) – it’s because it’s very similar in pronunciation to the first ‘Ha’ (ሀ). However, ‘ሐ‘ is often used by Ethiopian Muslims, for example, in names like ሙሐመድ (Muhammed), and it’s also commonly used by Tigrayan speakers. So, don’t be confused if you encounter it; just know it’s a variation you’ll see in certain contexts.
